Unusual pairings for peanut butter

iStockphoto

It’s still September, but some of us are already getting tired of  lunch-box fave peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Ready to switch things up? Food Republic has listed new interesting sandwich combination — all including the go-to staple, peanut butter.

While banana, honey and Nutella all seem like obvious peanut-butter partners, mayo does not.  But apparently, mayonnaise and peanuts go way back: More than a century ago, The Southern Housekeeper’s Peanut Sandwiches were filled with chopped roasted peanuts mixed with mayo.

Deaths linked to cantaloupe could reach 16 or more

WASHINGTON - Health officials say as many as 16 people have died from possible listeria illnesses traced to Colorado cantaloupes, the deadliest food outbreak in more than a decade.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that 72 illnesses, including 13 deaths, are linked to the tainted fruit. State and local officials say they are investigating three additional deaths that may be connected.

The death toll released by the CDC Tuesday — including newly confirmed deaths in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas — surpassed the number of deaths linked to an outbreak of salmonella in peanuts almost three years ago. Nine people died in that outbreak.

Scandalized Irish farmer makes Rihanna move video shoot

61-year-old Irish farmer Alan Graham probably was not expecting to ever find his name in the lead story on People.com, yet, lo and behold, there it appeared this morning thanks to a dispute between Graham... and Rihanna.

The pop star had received permission from Graham to shoot the music video for her (excellent) new single "We Found Love" in his grain field.

However, as Rihanna danced away in an, um, unusual red hankerchief bikini number, Graham drove his tractor over to the shoot and halted production.

Many of us have tried rubbing anti-aging creams on our faces and bodies to eliminate wrinkles, but what if taking a pill could yield better results? New Scientist is reporting that a new three-a-day "gene food" capsule may be a more affordable, less painful alternative to Botox, and possibly the first pill of its kind to succeed in banishing wrinkles from the inside out.

Halloween Vintage Costume Ideas

There are only a few months left before the Halloween fever hits the world again as it does every year. People hold costume parties and try to outdo each others costumes. You can forget about vampire costumes or zombie costumes because those costumes are usually already taken. It would be very annoying to see two or three other people wearing the same costume you are in a party. For a more original look, you can try dressing up in Halloween vintage costume,20's, 30's, 40's, 50's 60's and 70's Costumes. The Halloween vintage look is a sure winner. And since you can choose from any decade in the past for inspiration, the chances of showing up to a party and finding other people with the same costumes are significantly lower. Here are some great ideas for a Halloween vintage look.

Meet the world’s longest cat

Mymains Stewart Gillligan, or Stewie for short, is as long as his name, coming in at a whopping 123 cm or 48.5 in long. Thanks to his incredible size, the 5-year-old Maine Coon has snagged the title of World’s Longest Cat in the 2012 edition of Guinness World Records.

“When we first got him, Stewie was just an average-sized Maine Coon kitten,” owner Robin Hendrickson told Guinness World Records. “There was no indication at all that he was going to be as large and as long as he did end up being.”

See just how big Stewie is for yourself in the video below:

PIC: Jennifer Aniston Spends $450,000 on Painting

He bids, she buys!

Jennifer Aniston was the winning buyer at Christie's glitzy "Artists for Haiti" auction in NYC on Thursday -- where beau Justin Theroux did the bidding on her behalf.

PHOTOS: How Jen's edgy new beau is just like Angelina

Actor-screenwriter Theroux, 40, helped his love, 42, snag American artist Glenn Ligon's "Stranger #44," an abstract 2011 work of oil, charcoal and graphite on canvas that seems to match his downtown hipster tastes.

At the auction, "Stranger #44" (pictured with artist Glenn Ligon and Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem) was estimated at $150,000 to $200,000.

But Aniston helped shatter the record for sales of Ligon's work, spending a whopping $450,000 on the 72" by 60" painting, an Artists for Haiti rep confirms to Us.

Jaycee Dugard sues U.S. over monitoring of her captor

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard on Thursday sued the federal government and accused it of failing to monitor the felon who grabbed her off a Northern California street as a child and held her for 18 years.

Her captor, Phillip Garrido, was sentenced in June to 431 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping and multiple counts of sexual assault, in a case that resulted from his arrest in 2009 and the stunning rescue of Dugard.

Garrido, who kidnapped Dugard in 1991 when she was 11, had previous federal convictions dating to 1977 for kidnapping and forcible rape in a case stemming from his abduction of a woman in the Tahoe area of Northern California whom he took to Reno, Nevada.

You’d think after "Supersize Me", nobody would ever attempt a month-long McDonalds-only diet again. But Big Macs make people do crazy things. Again. And again.

The latest to try the Morgan Spurlock meal plan is Emily Strunk-Helm, a 36-year-old Arizona native with a self-described "passion" for the golden arches. Here’s the hitch: she’s also training for a marathon.

On September 8th, she began a 31-day rigorous runner's regimen in preparation for the Long Beach Marathon on October 9th. For fuel, she’s eating only off the McDonald's menu, “especially my favorites -- Cheeseburgers, Chicken Nuggets and French Fries,” she writes on her blog, appropriately titled McRunnerette

'Dancing With The Stars' Boots First Celeb From The Ballroom

Metta and Peta's dance - a cha cha - wasn't a hit with the judges on Monday night, although Carrie Anne Inaba did give the Laker points for his style.

"Now we know who the wild one is gonna be. You're sort of eccentric, and yet, kind of sexy. It works," she said.

"Cha cha's a sexy dance, and I thought that worked, but it was kind of wrong for all the technical reasons," she added.

Visible Only From Above, Mystifying 'Nazca Lines' Discovered in Mideast

They stretch from Syria to Saudi Arabia, can be seen from the air but not the ground, and are virtually unknown to the public.

They are the Middle East's own version of the Nazca Lines — ancient "geolyphs," or drawings, that span deserts in southern Peru — and now, thanks to new satellite-mapping technologies, and an aerial photography program in Jordan, researchers are discovering more of them than ever before. They number well into the thousands.

Referred to by archaeologists as "wheels," these stone structures have a wide variety of designs, with a common one being a circle with spokes radiating inside. Researchers believe that they date back to antiquity, at least 2,000 years ago. They are often found on lava fields and range from 82 feet to 230 feet (25 meters to 70 meters) across.

Salvage teams report progress in salvaging Norwegian cruise ship evacuated after fire

OSLO - Salvage teams reported progress on Friday as they pumped water from a tilting Norwegian cruise liner in danger of capsizing, a day after a fire on board killed two crew members and forced the evacuation of 260 other people.

The MS Nordlys, which tilted critically at an angle of 21.7 degrees in the morning, had slowly righted itself and was listing at 16 degrees in the evening as additional pumps spewed water from the slanting ship's bowels, officials said.

Police Chief Jon Steven Hasseldal was optimistic but cautious. "This has been a positive development, but it is not over," Hasseldal told reporters in the town of Aalesund, 230 miles (375 kilometres) northwest of the capital of Oslo.

Vintage plane crashes near grandstand at Nevada air race, killing 3 and injuring more than 50

RENO, Nev. - As thousands watched in horror, a World War II-era fighter plane competing in a Nevada event described as a car race in the sky suddenly pitched upward, rolled and did a nose-dive toward the crowded grandstand.

The plane, flown by a 74-year-old veteran Hollywood stunt pilot, then slammed into the tarmac in front of VIP box seats and blew to pieces in front of the pilot's family and a tight-knit group of friends who attend the annual event in Reno.

"It absolutely disintegrated," said Tim O'Brien of Grass Valley California, who attends the races every year. "I've never seen anything like that before."

The pilot and two spectators were killed and more than 50 people were injured amid a horrific scene strewn with smoking debris.

Canada’s richest neighbourhood is not on the West Coast

Toronto's skyline

There are a couple of surprises in the Askmen.com survey of Canada's Top 10 richest neighbourhoods, one of them being the No. 1 slot doesn't belong to the West Coast.

The website ranked neighbourhoods based on average home value and household income. While Vancouver has two neighbourhoods on the list, and Victoria gets one, Toronto, with three entries, apparently is home to Canada's poshest digs.

One of the list's surprises is that Winnipeg - not considered a particularly monied town - squeaks in at No. 10. The aptly named Tuxedo neighbourhood, a well-established area a few minutes from downtown with lakeside views and lots of green, has seen average selling prices jump to $500,000 from $383,000 in six years.

Winehouse had only Librium in system at death

The 27-year-old soul singer scored hits with such songs as "Rehab" and "Back to Black," which was the title track of her smash hit 2006 album. But even as Winehouse rose to stardom, she battled drug and alcohol addiction.

When she died on July 23, it was widely assumed that substance abuse was the root cause. Toxicology results from an autopsy released by the family late last month showed no illegal substances and some alcohol, although how it contributed to her death was not made clear.

Mitch Winehouse told Cooper that the only drug in her system was a small amount of Librium, which is used to help people overcome alcohol detoxification.

Upgrade Your Life: The 5 worst photos to post online

With online networks steering our social lives these days, deciding exactly how to represent ourselves on the web can be tricky. This episode of Upgrade Your Life addresses 5 kinds of photos you should avoid putting online — and why.

1. Don't post pictures showing personal data

Even if your Twitter account is private and you closely monitor who sees what on your Facebook profile, personal data revealed in photos isn't necessarily safe. Strangers and hackers aren't the only threat; people you know can steal your identity, too. And according to a study conducted by the Javelin Strategy and Research group, they are with increasing frequency, thanks to social media. According to Javelin's 2010 Identity Fraud Survey, people between the ages of 18 to 24 were especially prone to this kind of identity theft, likely due to their high level of engagement with social networking websites.

Nivea fined for slimming cream claims

Nivea's Canadian distributor has been fined almost $400,000 for making misleading claims that one of their creams can make you thinner.

Canada's Competition Bureau announced that Beiersdorf Canada Inc., the company's Canadian distributor, will stop making the claims about Nivea's 'My Silhouette' product.

Under the terms of the agreement, Beiersdorf will immediately remove the products from Canadian shelves. Beiersdorf has also agreed to pay a $300,000 penalty and to refund the purchase price and shipping costs to Canadian customers who bought the product.

The company will also issue a corrective notice on its website, and pay the commission $80,000 to cover the costs of its investigation.

Among other complaints, the bureau objected to the product's claim that regular use could achieve a "reduction of up to three centimetres on targeted body parts, such as thighs, hips, waist and stomach."

4 Rising Food Costs That Will Hurt Your Wallet

Prices are on the rise in grocery stores across the country. You may not notice the changes right away; that loaf of bread may be only a dime more expensive than it was last year. The soda you buy may be the same price but it's now 1.5 liters instead of two. Many of the major cereal manufacturers, such as General Mills, have warned of impending price increases. (Which items on your list are costing you more? Find out in Foods With The Biggest Price Increases.)

Why Are Grocery Prices Going Up?
While almost every grocery store aisle is affected by rising prices, a large part of the reason all comes down to two commodities: wheat and corn. Both food staples have been hit hard for the past two years - a combination of climate change, natural disasters and crop disease. Russia has experienced severe drought for the past two years and had stopped exporting wheat altogether to ensure enough of a domestic supply. They have resumed limited exports as of July 2011 but supplies are still short. A disease called wheat rust UG99 has wiped out crops across Africa and is spreading to other wheat-producing countries at a rapid pace.

The world still thinks Americans are "coolest": poll

LONDON (Reuters) - They may be witnessing their global superpower influence decline in the face of challenges from other emerging players on the world stage, but Americans have been voted the world's "coolest nationality" in an international poll.

Social networking site Badoo.com (http://www.badoo.com) asked 30,000 people across 15 countries to name the coolest nationality and also found that the Spanish were considered the coolest Europeans, Brazilians the coolest Latin Americans and Belgians the globe's least cool nationality.

"We hear a lot in the media about anti-Americanism," says Lloyd Price, Badoo's Director of Marketing. "But we sometimes forget how many people across the world consider Americans seriously cool."

10 restaurants with spectacular views

Savings-minded travellers may not always be able to spring for the loftiest hillside hotels, but a single meal at a spectacularly situated restaurant can be a worthy splurge. From glacial peaks to ancient rain forests - even an underwater dining room in the Indian Ocean - we've rounded up some unforgettable places to pick up a fork.

Argentina

The untamed Andes from the southern-most city in the world.
You might not expect to find world-class French food in a frontier city that's more or less at the ends of the earth-which makes Chez Manu an even more pleasant surprise. Set on a hill about a mile north of Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego and the southern-most city in the world, the restaurant first impresses visitors with its remarkable perspective on Beagle Channel. And then there's the food. Naturally, fish figures prominently-such as black hake, salmon, and herring, to which expat chef Emmanuel Herbin applies his own suitably French twists (seasoning with anise and herbs, say). Also worth a try: Herbin's takes on Patagonian lamb and Fuegian rabbit, served in an aged mustard sauce. (Photo courtesy of Chez Manu)

Police help Apple hunt for missing iPhone prototype

San Francisco police have assisted Apple in the search for a prototype of the latest iPhone that went astray in a bar in a repeat of an embarrassing loss that took place last year.

An Apple employee lost a yet-to-be-released iPhone 5 in a tequila bar in San Francisco's Mission District in July, technology news site CNET reported this week.

After the device was electronically tracked using GPS technology to a San Francisco house, four police officers and two Apple employees visited the home, the San Francisco police said in a statement distributed to news outlets.

"Apple employees called Mission police station directly, wanting assistance in tracking down a lost item," the press release said.

"The two Apple employees met with the resident and then went into the house to look for the lost item," it said. "The Apple employees did not find the lost item and left the house."

Typhoon Talas causes landslides as it moves north off Japan; 20 dead, 50 reported missing

TOKYO - Record rain and mudslides from powerful Typhoon Talas left at least 20 people dead in Japan on Sunday as the storm moved slowly northward past the country's western coast. At least 50 others were missing, local media said.

Evacuation orders and advisories were issued to 460,000 people in western and central Japan. At least 3,600 people were stranded by flooded rivers, landslides and collapsed bridges that were hampering rescue efforts, Kyodo News agency reported.

The typhoon dumped record amounts of rain in some areas, and more was expected. It was the country's worst storm since one in 2004 that left 98 people either dead or missing, the Yomiuri newspaper said.

Man finds $150,000 in garden

As the old saw goes, money doesn't grow on trees. But sometimes it sprouts up in the garden. An unemployed man in northern Illinois was out working in his backyard when he came across some serious green: bags filled with $150,000 cash.

Wayne Sabaj was headed to pick some broccoli to go with his roast. The carpenter spotted duffel bags that looked like trash by the peppers -- but they turned out to be a cash crop: stacks of $20 bills that added up to about $150,000. The 49-year-old, who is living with his dad, did not exactly jump for joy.

The out-of-work carpenter told ABC7, "I could really use this money." But with this money comes trouble. He explained, "With my luck, it would be bank robbery and I'd get caught and say I'd robbed a bank."

So the honest man with money troubles alerted the police to his amazing backyard treasure.

For now, police haven't a clue to where the cash came from: There are no reported burglaries in the area, and no banks have been robbed.

American, European airlines safer than Canada’s?

Canadians like to think our air travel is top-notch. Air Canada's long had a reputation as one of the safest airlines in the world, and WestJet is not far behind.

Yet if you believe a recent study of the world's safest airlines, Canada doesn't even register. The Air Transport Rating Agency (ATRA) released its list of the world's top ten safest airlines, and nary a Canadian carrier is mentioned.

It may not be that surprising considering it's been a spotty couple of years for flying in Canada. The plane that crashed in a Buffalo neighbourhood in 2009 was the same Bombardier model that is in heavy rotation by Porter Airlines, and a First Air Boeing 737 crashed last week in Resolute Bay, killing 12.

However, none of Canada's major airliners have had any significant incidents in recent years, and yet, the "world's safest" list is dominated by airlines with less-impressive track records.

The top 10 includes:

-Air France-KLM
-British Airways
-Lufthansa
-Japan Airlines
-AMR Corporation (American Airlines)
-Continental Airlines
-Delta Airlines
-Southwest Airlines
-United Airlines
-US Airways
