12 Canadians aboard plane that crashed in Guyana on Saturday

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - Caribbean Airlines says there were 12 Canadians aboard their flight that crashed in Guyana early Saturday morning.

The crash caused several injuries but no deaths among the 163 people who were on board.

Foreign Affairs in Ottawa issued a statement saying it has been in contact with local authorities and was told one of the Canadians aboard suffered a minor injury.

It says consular aid is being made available if needed.

The plane overshot the runway at Cheddi Jagan International Airport in rainy weather after departing from New York.

How did the medieval Knights Templar influence Norway gunman?

In his 1,500-page manifesto, confessed Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik claimed allegiance to a resurrected version of the Knights Templar, a medieval formation of Christian soldiers who waged brutal battle against Islam for control of the Holy Land and its relics. Breivik also wrote favorably of the mentorship of a British man known as "Richard (the Lionhearted)," who he credits for imparting to him the secrets of the Templar tradition.

In an exclusive report, AP correspondent Simon Haydon writes that he has located "Richard," whose actual name is Paul Ray, living in exile in Malta. In an interview with Haydon, Ray confirmed that he is associated with "a loose group of anti-Islamic extremists inspired by the Knights Templar," but denied that Breivik was associated with the group, or that he had served as Breivik's mentor.

Poland’s thinnest house a tight squeeze

ArchDaily.com

ArchDaily.com

Thin is in.

Some would see the property and call it “a crack between two buildings.” Centrala architect Jakub Szczesny saw potential in the narrow space in Warsaw’s Wola district.

Szczesny took the property sliver and designed a livable art installation called Ermitage.

When it’s completed, it will be the skinniest house in Poland — and possibly the world — measuring 72 centimetres at its narrowest and a mere 122 centimetres at its widest.

“Ermitage will be a workplace, a hermitage created for an outstanding Israeli writer, Etgar Keret.

Air Canada flight forced to return to Sydney after smoke seen in galley

SYDNEY - An Air Canada flight returned to Sydney airport on Thursday after crew members saw smoke coming from an oven in the galley, an airline official said.

No one on Flight AC34 was injured in the incident, which forced the pilot to dump fuel before safely landing the plane in Sydney, said Jeannie Foster, Air Canada's general manager for Australia and New Zealand.

"There was smoke seen by a crew member in an oven so the captain made the right decision and decided to come back to Sydney to check it out as a safety precaution," Foster told The Associated Press.

Norway PM says attacks response to be 'more democracy' as Norwegians try to move forward

OSLO - Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg vowed Wednesday that the twin terror attacks that have stunned his country will not intimidate Norway and that his countrymen will fight back with "more democracy."

Norwegians will defend themselves by showing they are not afraid of violence and by participating more broadly in politics, he told reporters.

"It's absolutely possible to have an open, democratic, inclusive society, and at the same time have security measures and not be naive," he said.

Stoltenberg underlined his commitment to openness, defending freedom of thought even if includes extremist views such as those held by the 32-year-old Norwegian who confessed to Friday's bomb blast at government headquarters and to the shooting massacre at a Labor Party youth camp hours later. At least 76 people were killed.

British athletes may skip London Opening Ceremony

What's an Olympic Opening Ceremony without Olympic athletes? We may find that out in London next year, as several high-profile British athletes are contemplating boycotting the Opening Ceremony.

Coaches have already banned the entire British track and field squad from taking part in the London 2012 ceremony, even though they will not be competing until at least a week later. Britain's swimming team is likely to follow suit.

It means spectators who have paid as much as $3,280 for a ticket will almost certainly be deprived of seeing big names such as the heptathlete Jessica Ennis, the swimmer Rebecca Adlington and the teenage diver Tom Daley parade through the Olympic stadium, The Sunday (London) Times reported.

Phillips Idowu, the triple jumper, will also skip the event, while doubts remain over the attendance of Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton, the Olympic cycling champions.

The problem? Staging for the Opening Ceremony can take up to eight hours. For much of it, the athletes are standing and walking. It's common practice for athletes who are competing soon after the ceremony to skip it, but the time spent on the ceremony is discouraging all athletes to participate.

Amy Winehouse's mom tells paper singer seemed 'out of it' day before she died; family 'bereft'

LONDON - Amy Winehouse's mother said the singer seemed unwell a day before she died, a British newspaper reported Sunday, while her family mourned the loss of "a wonderful daughter, sister, niece" and more tributes flowed in from fans and fellow performers.

A mound of flowers, messages and handwritten notes grew Sunday outside of the north London home where ambulance crews found the singer dead before they arrived on Saturday.

"R.I.P. Never Forgotten," read one message, while another said "It's all right, love. Go now."

The Sunday Mirror quoted Janis Winehouse as saying she believed it was "only a matter of time" before her daughter died. The 27-year-old singer had publicly struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for years.

"She seemed out of it. But her passing so suddenly still hasn't hit me," Janis told the tabloid.

Police said the cause of her death is being treated as "unexplained," rejecting speculation that she died from a drug overdose as "inappropriate." The circumstances surrounding her death are not yet clear, but police said a post-mortem is expected Monday or Tuesday.

That sinking feeling: Woman finds giant sinkhole under her bed

A sinkhole formed in a house on July 19, 2011 in the north of Guatemala City. (Johan Ordonez/AFP/Getty Images …

Here's something you never want to hear: "That loud booming sound is coming from inside the house!"

That's what one Inocenta Hernandez from Guatemala City learned after a sudden noise caused her to run outside, thinking there had been an explosion nearby. When she realized the problem was inside her home, she returned to find a gaping, three feet wide, 40 feet deep sinkhole beneath her bed.

Hernandez, 65, was relieved that the damage was only to her house, and hadn't harmed her grandchildren, who had been playing near the bed. This was a little too close to home, but she couldn't have been too surprised that a sinkhole had visited her city.

This Email Got One Stanford Student A Huge Job At Foursquare

Two years ago, a Stanford business school student named Tristan Walker sent Foursquare cofounders Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai an email out of the blue, asking for a job.

Today, Tristan is Foursquare's director of business development.  During his tenure, he's built partnerships between Foursquare and huge brands such as Bravo, MTV, CNN, New York Times, NBA and Starbucks.

To celebrate the two year anniversary of the email, Tristan just published it on his personal blog, along with some notes:

Today marks two years since i sent my very first email to dennis and naveen (wow i was such a nerd! ha). naveen sent a reminder to team foursquare today and i thought i’d share it on my blog. Man, how times have changed:

5 Foods That Curb Your Appetite

For many, the feeling of insatiable hunger just never seems to go away! But believe it or not, there are foods that can actually curb your appetite, allowing you to eat less and feel fuller. Following are five healthy options to help you successfully fight hunger pangs!

1. Soup

Water is actually the ultimate appetite suppresser, but having a glass doesn’t satisfy the desire to eat or taste something. A great alternative is soup. High in water and low in calories, broths or vegetable soups  (avoid the creamy kinds) can help you reach your weight-loss goal. In fact, researchers at Pennsylvania State University found that men and women who consumed two servings of low-calorie soup per day lost  50 percent more weight than counterparts who consumed the same amount of calories in snacks!

Scottish couple scoop record £162m lottery win

A Scottish couple out of work due to ill health have been unveiled as Europe's biggest ever lottery winners, scooping £162 million ($262 million) in the EuroMillions jackpot.

Colin Weir, 64, and his wife Chris, 55, who have been married for 30 years and live in the seaside town of Largs near Glasgow, claimed the prize after Tuesday's draw which followed a series of rollovers.

The money catapulted them into 430th place in this year's Sunday Times Rich List for Britain, nine places beneath footballer David Beckham and his fashion designer wife Victoria Beckham, who have an official fortune of £165 ($266 million).

"We were tickled pink," Chris Weir, a former psychiatric nurse, said as the couple faced the press for the first time after waiving their right to anonymity.

"I even had a glass of white wine, which is something I normally only do at Christmas. It really is unbelievable."

Colin Weir, a former TV cameraman and studio manager, appeared slightly dazed by the attention.

Serena Williams’ plunging minidress steals show at ESPYs

To say Serena Williams stole the show at the ESPYs suggests that there was a show to steal.

The world No. 172 walked the red carpet in a dazzling, low-cut pink minidress that accentuated her curvy physique. The gold Christian Louboutin heels added at least four inches to Serena's 5-foot-9 frame.

[Photos: Serena Williams at the ESPYs]

Despite playing in two tournaments since last year's show, Serena was awarded the ESPY award for best female tennis player, which is like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences giving an Oscar to Al Pacino for this year's sure-to-be stinker "Jack and Jill" because he was fantastic in "The Godfather II."

Yes, we know; it's useless to complain about a meaningless, arbitrary award like an ESPY. Still, you'd think ESPN could have lured Serena to the show with the promise of something else (a lifetime achievement award, a montage of her comeback, a shawl) rather than a prize for playing no matches during the voting period. Not that there were many other candidates for the prize but surely there was someone. What about wheelchair tennis great Esther Vergeer, who's won more than 400 matches in a row? Or mom-turned-champion Kim Clijsters? Or those ladies who always play doubles at the court down the street from you because, you know, they played tennis this year.

Two photos, thirty years apart, move the Web

Thirty years ago, the first space shuttle launched into the stratosphere. Chris Bray and his father Kenneth watched -- and took a picture. Then last Friday, the shuttle Atlantis took its final trip. Again, the Bray men were there. And again, the two snapped a photo to capture the moment.

The side-by-side photos, which are up on Chris Bray's Flickr photostream, immediately went viral on the Web.

The first shot shows 13-year-old Chris with then 39-year-old dad looking through binoculars at the space shuttle Columbia's first launch on April 12, 1981, from the Kennedy Space Center.

The second snap comes three decades later and recreates the same moment at the last shuttle voyage. The young son is now an adult. His father is now gray-haired.

Chris Bray wrote on his Flickr page of the side-by-side images: "The picture we waited 30 years to complete."

Comet's Death by Sun Photographed for First Time

The death of a comet that plunged into the sun was captured on camera this month for the first time in history, scientists say.

The comet met its fiery demise on July 6 when it zoomed in from behind the sun and melted into oblivion as it crashed into the star. It was NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a satellite orbiting Earth that studies the sun, which witnessed the comet's death-blow.

One of the SDO spacecraft's high-definition imagers "actually spotted a sun-grazing comet as it disintegrated over about a 15 minute period (July 6, 2011), something never observed before," SDO officials said.

Beckhams greet baby girl Harper Seven

British football superstar David Beckham's wife Victoria gave birth Sunday to a baby girl named Harper Seven, their first daughter to add to three sons, the couple announced.

Speculation that the birth was imminent mounted after Beckham's wife, a former member of the Spice Girls pop group, failed to accompany her husband to a weekend reception for visiting Prince William and his new wife Catherine.

"I am so proud and excited to announce the birth of our daughter Harper Seven Beckham," wrote the footballer on his Facebook page.

"She weighed a healthy 7lbs 10oz (3.5 kilograms) and arrived at 7:55 this morning, here in LA. Victoria is doing really well and her brothers are delighted to have a baby sister."

'A dream come true' as South Sudan launches new nation

The Republic of South Sudan rang in its status as the world's newest country this weekend with a series of spontaneous and orchestrated celebrations of what President Salva Kiir called "a dream come true."

On Saturday, tens of thousands of southerners flocked -- some even ran in their high heels and dress clothes -- to a fitting site for the main independence ceremony: the burial grounds of their fallen hero and former leader, Dr. John Garang.

MONITOR QUIZ: Weekly news quiz for July 3-8, 2011

“We were bombed, maimed, enslaved, treated worse than a refugee in our own country, but we have to forgive, although we will not forget,” Mr. Kiir said in his speech to the masses, a couple hours after he took the oath of office as the first elected president of the South Sudan.

Harry Potter's' Tom Felton Says Cast Weren't Originally Picked For 'Our Acting Ability

The "Harry Potter" film series turned little known actors into household names and ignited the careers of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, but according to Tom Felton, who plays "Potter" nemesis Draco Malfoy, the cast started out without any special skills.

"Let's be honest: we weren't picked for 'Harry Potter' for our acting ability - it was because we looked like the characters as they'd been written," he told Britain's Daily Mail, in a recent interview. "We started out as rank amateurs, and we'll be lucky if we've [learned] something over the past 10 years. It's a question of what we do with that now, where we go from here."

Former first lady Betty Ford dies, age 93

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Betty Ford, the wife of the late President Gerald Ford, who overcame alcohol and prescription drug addictions and helped found a rehabilitation clinic that bears her name, died on Friday at the age of 93.

"I was deeply saddened this afternoon when I heard of Betty Ford's death," another former first lady, Nancy Reagan, said in a statement confirming Ford's death.

Ford once was dubbed the "fighting first lady" by Time magazine because of her outspoken political views, which often differed from those of her husband's Republican Party.

She strongly supported women's rights while her husband was president from 1974 to 1977, working the phones in a vain attempt to get states to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, which sought to give women and men equality under law.

1879 London murder mystery solved

A murder mystery dating back to 1879 has been finally resolved aftera skull unearthed in BBC legend David Attenborough's garden was formally recognised as that of a woman murdered by her maid 132 years ago.

Julia Martha Thomas, a wealthy widow aged 55, was killed by her 29-year-old housekeeper Kate Webster very close to Park Road in well-to-do Richmond, but her head was never found.

The case became known as the 'Barnes Mystery', which gripped London at the time.

Webster, a convicted thief and fraudster, chopped up Thomas with an axe, boiled the remains and gave the dripping to local children to eat.

A box containing human flesh was found in the nearby River Thames days after the killing and one of the victim's feet was found on an allotment.

'NY Ink's' Ami James on Celeb Tattoos

Jennifer Aniston was recently spotted in NYC showing off her very first tattoo: the name Norman on the inside of her right foot. The fresh ink is a tribute to the 42-year-old actress's dog Norman, a Welsh corgi-terrier mix that passed away in May at 15 years old. Memorial tattoos are a serious and often necessary thing, but Jennifer chose one of the worst places of all time to get it, says NY Ink's Ami James. The foot is consistently being exposed to the elements, naturally exfoliating itself and being exposed to constant friction. Even a good tattoo will not withstand that for much time at all, the expert tattoo artist explains. Jennifer will be lucky if that tattoo looks decent for even a few months.Tuesday, July, 5, 2011, 5:5 PM

Thomas Levet might miss British after celebration injury

If 2010 was the year of the 59s, then 2011 might be the year of the freak celebration injury.

Exactly three months ago to the day, Stacy Lewis won the Kraft Nabisco Championship, and tradition says that the winner must jump in Poppie's Pond next to the 18th green. Sadly, Stacy's mom Carol nearly broke her leg in the jump, ending up with just a torn muscle from the leap into uncharted waters.

Thomas Levet (above on the left, with his manager Patrice Bartez) probably could have used some advice from Carol. After winning the French Open, his country's championship, the 42-year-old went for his own cannonball experiment into the lake at Le Golf National and might have injured himself right out of the British Open in two weeks.

New cars you should steer clear of

Just when it seemed American carmakers were shrugging off their reputations for building mediocre vehicles and starting on the road to financial recovery, along comes some bad news courtesy of Forbes' list of the worst cars on the road.

According to the list, U.S. auto manufacturers still have a long way to go to catch up with their Japanese competitors - an opinion reflected in Ford's recent plummet in J.D. Power's rankings. Surprisingly, though, while American companies account for seven of the 10 worst vehicles, not a single Ford landed on the list.

Tyson pulls a fast one in Vegas, renews his wedding vows at birthday party

He's no longer "The Baddest Man on the Planet." You could almost call former heavyweight king Mike Tyson "sweet."

Seems far-fetched, right? We're basing that on the surprise wedding he put together in Las Vegas and a reception food spread that would serve as a dentist's worst nightmare.

The impromptu ceremony went down at Las Vegas' M resort, at what was supposed to be a joint birthday party for both Tyson and his wife, Lakiha Spicer Tyson.

Chinese residents shocked to see ‘ghost city’ rise from river

Most people who have been outside on  a hot day are used to seeing small mirages of puddles appear on the road, but few of us can admit to witnessing a mirage the size of a city.

But that's what happened for the people of Huanshan, China earlier this month when they looked over the Xin'an River to see tall buildings appear to rise out of the mist as it settled over the river at dusk.   Residents are used to only seeing only sky across the horizon over the river.

"It's really amazing, it looks like a scene in a movie, in a fairyland," one witness told ITN News.

Residents speculated that the image may be a vortex to a lost civilization, but scientists are suggesting that it is a mirage.
