How the Richest 400 People in America Got So Rich

In 1992, the 400th richest person in America made $24 million.

In 2007, the 400th richest person in America made $138 million (or $87 million, inflation-adjusted).

Now, that almost certainly wasn't the same guy. There's a lot of churn at the top of the money pyramid. In all of the 1990s, only 25% of the Fortunate 400 made more than one appearance. But the overall message is the same. The rich keep get much richer?

Can you guess who this pigtailed toddler is?

Instagram

It seems that old, long-forgotten photos from childhood always resurface during the holidays -- not only for us regular folk, but for celebrities too! And one amazing A-lister shared one of her childhood pics on Instagram this week.

This star is nearly unrecognizable with her hair tied in bushy pigtails, with two white bows rivaling the size of her head. But the serious facial expression and perfectly poised finger on her chin gives us a glimpse into her future profession.

Don't use these three ATM PIN codes

Yahoo! editors have selected this article as a favorite of 2012. It first appeared on Yahoo! Finance in September and was one of the most popular stories of the month. Readers joked about people who use the most common PIN codes, and shared how they came up with their own. "My pin number is my post office box number from my time in the Air Force 30 years ago on a base that no longer exists," wrote user Nick. "Feel free to hack that."

If you lost your ATM card on the street, how easy would it be for someone to correctly guess your PIN and proceed to clean out your savings account? Quite easy, according to data scientist Nick Berry, founder of Data Genetics, a Seattle technology consultancy.

Color-blocking trend spices up a tiny apartment

Even the tiniest places have plenty of room for style, as one of my favorite Web series, "Tiny, Eclectic, Amazing Spaces," continues to show week after week. (If you've never heard of it, the episode starring Living in a Nutshell's Janet Lee, "How to design a small rental apartment," is a great place to start.)

What baby boomers need to live to 100

Your chances of reaching age 100 could be better than you think — especially if you get some additional sleep and improve your diet.

U.S. seniors who make it to their 100th birthdays tend to credit social connections, exercise and spiritual activity as keys to successful aging.

Research from UnitedHealthcare looks at centenarians and baby boomers, asking the former about the “secrets of aging success” and evaluating whether the latter are taking the necessary steps to celebrate a 100th birthday.

You may be passionate about fashion and always dreamed of a career in retail, but are not sure you have the skills to cut it as a fashion buyer or merchandiser.

Music student gets a surprise 11 months in the making

A hardworking music student was surprised with her very own tuba during a recent school concert.

Tara Fayazi was performing a solo with the Tuba Euphonium Ensemble at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, on Monday when the conductor stopped her. He told her that something sounded wrong with the tuba she was playing. He started fiddling with the instrument, then called out for someone backstage to bring him a screwdriver.

Knowshon Moreno jumps over Ed Reed like a hurdle during 20-yard run

Safe to say that the first quarter of their game against the Denver Broncos didn't go do well for the Baltimore Ravens. Denver put up five first downs to Baltimore's zero, amassed 94 yards to the Ravens' 21, and had a serious edge in yards per play (4.3 to 1.9). The Ravens' offense, now headed up by former quarterbacks coach and new offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell after Cam Cameron was fired last week, had a trio of three-and-outs, and a fourth drive that ended in a fumble. Not good. The final score of 34-17 in a decisive Broncos win was even worse for the Ravens.

12/12/12 incites both fear and celebration around the globe

12/12/12 represents the Apocalypse for some and a new beginning for others.

Astrologists and conspiracy mongers have added another ominous date to the list of foreseen doom — December 12.

December 12, 2012, or 12/12/12, is the last date for the next 88 years when every number will be the same. At 12:12 a.m. and p.m. there will be five repeats of the number, six if you care to watch the clock tick until it reaches 12 seconds.

Beautiful Fiasco: Adam Lambert As You’ve Never Seen Him Before

Most male pop stars would rather shave their heads than go prematurely gray, but of course, Adam Lambert is not like most male pop stars. Just-released, high-fashion photos from the British tastemaker glossy Fiasco feature the American Idol looking more like a classic matinee idol, with his pomade-slicked, silver-dyed coif, and these stunning shots may soon directly contribute to a severe drop-off in worldwide sales for Grecian Formula For Men. Christian Watford’s 3-pointer to beat Kentucky as a Christmas lights display

There's no better example of the wonders of modern technology than the progression of Christmas lights.

We used to be satisfied putting up lights on our homes that were merely simple and silent. Then we learned how to synch them to holiday music or pop songs so they flash along with the beat. And now, one Fort Wayne family has taken the inevitable next step and hooked up their lights to last season's most memorable Indiana basketball highlight.

But many of us may not know the wrong combinations could mimic the drug's action and exaggerate its effect. So whether you've just started a new medication, are experiencing side effects or suddenly find that what you're taking isn't working effectively, I suggest following these steps to ensure your prescriptions are consumed away from the most common offending interactions:

The Beyblade Destroyer Dome Play Set is another accessory in the line of Beyblade battle top toys. The plastic dome resembles the metal cages you normally see for dirt bikes in circus acts. The special wheel-like covers you use on the tops are supposed to mimic that action and send them into 360 degree rotations around the battle dome. The toy looks pretty cool and action packed in commercials, but does it really stand up to a child’s expectations? Read on to find out.

Chart Watch Extra: “Thriller” Turns 30

It's hard to believe, but Friday marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Michael Jackson's Thriller, an album that appealed to all audiences—all ages, races and nationalities—like few other recordings in music history.

Brad Pitt Carries $1,100 Cash in His Wallet

Venturelli/WireImage

Ever wonder how much cash a Hollywood A-lister like Brad Pitt carries in his wallet? Apparently, $1,100 big ones.

The exact amount has been revealed not because Pitt was bragging — that's not his style — but because he used it in his latest act of kindness on Thanksgiving Day. According to People, Pitt donated all the money in his wallet, which happened to be $1,100, to a fundraiser for the U.K.'s Southampton General Hospital neonatal unit. The BBC reported that Pitt made the donation when a woman named Tricia Wilson-Hughes was soliciting donations from the crew of Pitt's film "Wold War Z," which was filming in Dorset near a gift shop where Hughes works. Hughes approached Pitt's bodyguard for a contribution, and was stunned when he returned with Pitt's sizeable offering a few minutes later.

This year, Walmart employed a brilliant tactic for controlling the crowds.

Then the bottom fell out. Within a year, a perfect storm of financial and professional mishaps would carry him down a seemingly never-ending rabbit's hole of debt.
