Plane towing marriage proposal banner crashes

A plane towing a banner, "Will you marry me," turned into a plea, "Will you help me?" after the pilot had to ditch into Rhode Island's Block Island Sound.

The pilot, Mark Simmons, owner of Simmons Aviation, based in Pawcatuck, Connecticut, was pulled out of the water by a passing boater, who notified the Coast Guard of the rescue after Simmons' plane experienced engine troubles.

Tornado hunter Greg Johnson captures twisters in Saskatchewan

He saw three touch town in 20 minutes near Regina

Another round of severe storms blasted through Saskatchewan Tuesday, and Tornado hunter Greg Johnson was there to catch a lot of the action.

"We spotted three tornadoes in a 20-minute span," he wrote on his blog Tuesday. "The first tornado touched down and stayed down for about eight minutes and tore through a farm yard. Several building were destroyed but fortunately the house was spared and no one was injured."

Man makes final house payment in pennies


Apparently all that loose change collecting in the couch cushions pays off: A Massachusetts man who vowed to pay his last mortgage payment in pennies made good on the pledge.

Thirty-five years after purchasing the house, one Thomas Daigle and his wife, Sandra, walked into Milford Federal Savings and Loan Association--after alerting the bank to their plan--with 62,000 pennies in two steel crates weighing approximately 400 pounds apiece.

Black Widow Spiders May Have Met Their Match

Black widow spiders seem to be universally feared. But who's scared of a brown widow? The black widow should be quaking all eight of its boots, a new study suggests. In the United States, there's a new widow in town. The brown widow. And scientists say it may be taking over some native western black widow territory.

That may be good news in one sense: Brown widow spider bites are less toxic than those of black widows, researchers say.

New Particle at World's Largest Atom Smasher is Likely Higgs Boson

Physicists are more than 99 percent sure that they've found a new elementary particle that is likely the long-sought Higgs boson.

Evidence for the new particle was reported today (July 4) by scientists from the world's largest atom smasher, the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. Researchers reported they'd seen a particle weighing roughly 125 times the mass of the proton, with a level of certainty that all but seals the deal it's the Higgs boson.

The first photos from the set of "Caught in Flight" — a movie focusing on the last two years of the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, including her romance with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan — show British-born, Australian-raised Watts looking eerily similar to the royal, who died in a tragic car crash in 1997.

But call a friendly island broker and you'll find that around the globe, there are hundreds of rocky, sandy, grassy or coral islands on sale at any time. They can be everything from idyllic to uninhabitable, within spitting distance of a major city or many hundreds of miles from anything, with their own airport or inaccessible by anything but a canoe.
