Reputed Mafia patriarch Rizzuto killed;source

MONTREAL - Nicolo Rizzuto, the reputed patriarch of Canada's most famous Mafia family, has been shot and killed, a police source said.

Police say an 86-year-old man died after being shot at his home in the north end of Montreal Wednesday night.

They would not immediately identify the victim, but a source told The Canadian Press that the man struck by bullets was Rizzuto.

The Rizzuto clan, which once ruled over Canada's underworld, has been has been decimated in recent months.

Since last year, the family and its associates have been targeted in a series of slayings that crime analysts say are an attempt to destabilize its hold on power.

Wednesday's killing, if confirmed, drives a definitive nail into the coffin of a once-formidable criminal organization.

Reputed crime boss Vito Rizzuto, Nicolo's son, is in a U.S. jail.

It looks like a scenario from the movie.
