Icelandic chieftains gathered in this spot in 930 AD to form the world's first parliament. For 300 years afterwards, they continued to meet here once a year to hold elections, amend laws and settle arguments and disputes.

Thingvellir national park, surrounding the site, is considered the greatest symbol of Iceland's ecological and geological richness. The park overlooks a landscape that includes volcanoes, faults and gorges, as well as Iceland's largest lake. Hiking trails and campgrounds make it easy to remain entirely embedded in the starkly beautiful scenery throughout your stay.
